रंगास्वामी सारंगन का जन्म 1929 में तंजौर में हुआ था। 1952 में उन्होंने मद्रास कला-विद्यालय से ललित कला तथा व्यावसायिक कला में डिप्लोमा प्राप्त किया।
सारंगन ने 1963 से एकल प्रदर्शनियों लगाना आरम्भ किया था दिल्ली, बम्बई, मद्रास, हैदराबाद के अतिरिक्त ब्रेडफोर्ड, सान फ्रांसिस्को आदि में भी उन्होंने कला-प्रदर्शनियों आयोजित की।
उन्हें 1964 तथा 1971 में आइफैक्स का पुरस्कार एवं 1968 में अकादमी आफ फाइन आर्ट्स कलकत्ता का पुरस्कार प्राप्त हुआ ।
यूनाइटेड स्टेट्स इनफार्मेशन सर्विस द्वारा आयोजित स्मिथसोनियन छापा निर्माण कार्यशाला नई दिल्ली में भी उन्होंने भाग लिया था। वे दक्षिण भारत की सोसाइटी आफ पेण्टर्स तथा प्रोग्रेसिव पेन्टर्स एसोसियेशन मद्रास के भी सदस्य रहे हैं।
सारंगन धातु की चादर में गड्ढे डालकर विविध आलंकारिक आकृतियाँ बनाते हैं तथा स्थान-स्थान पर रंग भरते हैं। प्रायः पक्षी, मयूर तथा मन्दिर उनके प्रिय विषय रहे हैं।
अपने तकनीक की आलंकारिक क्षमता का उन्होंने वैष्णव धर्म के प्रतीकों के अंकन में भरपूर उपयोग किया है जैसे, शंख, चक्र तथा पद्म
वे पहले केनवास पर कार्य करते थे किन्तु अब अल्म्यूनियम की चादर तथा काँच का प्रयोग करते हैं और उसी पर रंग तथा मारबिल का चूर्ण लगाते हैं।
वैष्णव तिलक को उन्होंने पर्याप्त विविधता से चित्रित किया है उनकी आकृतियों में रेखाओं का लयात्मक प्रयोग है कभी-कभी वे रंगों तथा रंगीन मारबिल के चूर्ण से मणिक-कुट्टिम (मोजाइक ) के समान सुन्दर प्रभाव भी उत्पन्न कर देते हैं। उनके सभी चित्रों में एक समान पद्धति का प्रयोग है।
सारंगन के चित्र सरल लोक-शैली के समान आभासित होते हैं किन्तु हैं वे वास्तव में आधुनिक कोलाज चित्र धार्मिक वैष्णव प्रतीकों तथा आलंकारिक अभिप्रायों को वे ट्यूब में से बत्ती के समान निकाले गये रंग से धरातल पर उभरा हुआ ही रहने देते हैं। कुछ सपाट तलों को रंग से भर देते हैं और रेखाओं का भी प्रयोग सीमांकन में कर लेते हैं।
अपने चित्रों को वे आलंकारिक पेनल से अधिक कुछ नहीं बनाते। तकनीक की विशिष्टता तथा वैष्णव प्रतीकों के प्रयोग के कारण ही उनकी कला का महत्व है।
