The first important movement of modern painting in Europe is Impressionism. It was mainly prevalent in Paris from 1874 to 1886 and its main artists were Monet, Pisarro, Renoir, Sisley, Dega etc.

In Impressionism, mainly the play of light has been presented, hence these artists have used unmixed colours so that maximum light can be reflected in the colours.

Along with white and black, these artists had also abandoned the use of brown and grey colours. In terms of subjects also, these artists had completely abandoned the ancient subjects and with the aim of understanding the realities of contemporary life, apart from painting natural scenes according to time and environment by visiting the scene of the incident, they also painted still lifes, coffee houses, prostitutes, vagabonds, drunkards, middle and lower class businessmen and artisan artists.

Inspired by photography, Impressionist painters also tried to depict the busiest moments of life.

Later, this movement transformed into Neo-Impressionism in which mixing of colours was completely abandoned and unmixed colours were used in paintings in the form of dots only.

The changes in the colours of the lit and shadowed parts of the same object depending on the intensity of sunlight at different times of the day were carefully studied.

Indian painters who studied foreign methods have also painted in the impressionist style. Among the early artists of Bengal, Yaminirai made many landscape paintings in the impressionist style.

Most of the modern Indian landscape painters started their paintings using the Impressionist method. India’s famous painter Husain also painted many scenes using a method similar to Impressionism in his early days.

The water colour landscape paintings made in the impressionist style by Dhond of Bombay and Ranveer Singh Bisht of Lucknow are unique.
