शान्ति दवे का जन्म अहमदाबाद में 1931 में हुआ था। वे बड़ौदा विश्वविद्यालय के 1956 के प्रथम बैच के छात्र हैं। उनका आरम्भिक कार्य लघु चित्रों पर आधारित रहा है जिसमें घनवादी विकृति का भी कुछ अंश है।
सम्पूर्ण रचनाएं आलंकारिक अधिक रही हैं। सम्भवतः बचपन के ग्रामीण परिवेश के प्रभाव के कारण उन्होंने अपने चित्रों में वैसा ही वातावरण अंकित करने का प्रयत्न किया है। किन्तु इनमें रोमाण्टिक भावना नहीं दिखाई देती।
ग्रामीण विषयों जैसे पनघट, बैलगाड़ी, मछुए, किसान आदि की आकृतियों तथा झोंपड़ी, खेत आदि की पृष्ठभूमि, अलंकृत रंग-बिरंगे परिधान आदि सपाट रंगों में गहरी सीमा रेखा के साथ अत्यन्त संवेदनशील रूप में अंकित किये गये हैं।
लम्बी आकृतियों और धनवादी तकनीक से प्रभावित विकृतियों में एक सहज सौन्दर्य उभर कर आया है जिसमें कृत्रिमता का आभास नहीं होता। चित्रों का प्रभाव मणिकुट्टिम जैसा लगता है।
1959 से दवे ने अपने चित्रों में विभिन्न सामग्री एवं तकनीक का प्रयोग आरम्भ किया पारदर्शी रंगतों, गाढ़े लेप के समान लगाये गये रंगों, चित्रित धरातल को कहीं कहीं किसी नुकीली वस्तु से खुरचने के अतिरिक्त उन्होंने बालू तथा घिसे हुए चिपटे पत्थरों के टुकड़ों (Pebbles) को भी धरातलीय प्रभावों की भिन्नता तथा प्रचुरता की दृष्टि से लगाना आरम्भ कर दिया।
पर जब उन्होंने यह अनुभव किया कि केनवास पर केवल रंगों से ही कार्य करना चाहिए, उन्होंने इस बाहरी सामग्री का प्रयोग छोड़ दिया। गाड़े रंग के लिये उन्होंने मोम का प्रयोग आरम्भ कर दिया। इससे वे चित्र को उभरी हुई नक्काशी की भाँति बनाने में सफल हुए ।
दवे ने चित्रों में से कहानी को बिल्कुल निकाल दिया और चित्र के डिजाइन को केही प्रमुख महत्व दिया।
अतः चित्र के धरातल का अत्यन्त कुशलतापूर्ण विभाजन और आकृतियों के अनुपातों तथा रंगों का संयोजन आदि बहुत विचारपूर्वक किया जाने लगा।
चित्र के धरातल पर रंग कहीं-कहीं एक इंच तक उभरा हुआ या आगे को निकला हुआ है। इसके सन्तुलन तथा विरोध में चित्र के बड़े-बड़े क्षेत्र पारदर्शी रंगों में बनाये गये हैं।
इससे उन्होंने एक विशेष प्रकार के भ्रम उत्पन्न कर दिये हैं। कहीं-कहीं उभरे हुए धरातल सामान्य प्रतीत होते हैं और उनके निकट के तल गहरे या गड्डेदार होने का अभास देते हैं।
चित्र में रंगों के द्वारा दिया गया विस्तार या दूरी का प्रभाव इस भ्रम को और भी बढा देता है। रंगों के द्वारा धरातलीय प्रभाव पहले की ही भाँति उत्पन्न करते हैं, यद्यपि अब उनके रंगों के बलों में अधिक सूक्ष्मता आ गयी है।
उनके कुछ नये चित्रों में सपाट रंग के धरातल शान्त सागर जैसे तथा गाढ़े रंग के धब्बे भवनों के समूह जैसे प्रतीत होते हैं। यह गाढ़ा रंग इकसार न लगाया जाकर कुछ खुरदरापन लिये लगाया गया है जो भवनों के भग्नावशेषों जैसा लगता है और चित्रों में एक रहस्यमय तथा कालातीत अनुभूति कराता है।
शान्ति दवे अपने निजी तकनीक और रंग-व्यवहार के कारण अपनी अलग पहचान बना चुके हैं। उनकी रचना-प्रक्रिया एवं तकनीक श्रम-साध्य हैं। अमूर्त भाषा से जुड़े उनके चित्र नये प्रयोगों के कारण प्रभावित करते हैं।
नये कलाकारों में वे सबसे अधिक सफल हुए हैं। उन्होंने ललित कला अकादमी के तीन तथा तोक्यो द्विवार्षिकी के अतिरिक्त अनेक पुरस्कार तथा सम्मान प्राप्त किये हैं। एयर इण्डिया तथा अन्य कई प्रमुख संस्थाओं के लिये उन्होंने सुन्दर भित्ति चित्र भी अंकित किये हैं।
1985 में शान्ति दवे को भारत सरकार द्वारा “पद्मश्री” से विभूषित किया गया है। श्री दवे बड़ौदा ग्रुप आफ आर्टिस्ट्स के संस्थापक सदस्य हैं।
उन्होंने भारत के अतिरिक्त मनीला, स्विटज़रलैण्ड, जर्मनी, मिस्र, इटली, पेरिस, न्यूयार्क, लन्दन, ब्राजील, जापान, काबुल, वाशिंगटन, ओहियो तथा लास एंजिल्स आदि में प्रदर्शनियाँ की हैं।
