अब्दुल रहीम अप्पा भाई आलमेलकर का जन्म अहमदाबाद में हुआ था। बचपन से ही उन्हें चित्रकला का शौक था। उनके पिता एक कपड़ा मिल में स्पिनिंग मास्टर तथा बाद में मैनेजर के पद पर थे। पिताजी के साथ उन्होंने बचपन में अहमदाबाद, दिल्ली, कलकत्ता, भावनगर तथा बडौदा आदि का भ्रमण किया।
आप शोलापुर में नवीं कक्षा तक पढ़े किन्तु कला के शौक के कारण पढ़ाई छोड दी और हर समय चित्रांकन करने लगे। उन्होंने एक कलाविद श्री के०एन० केलकरके निर्देशन में चित्रकारी का कार्य करना आरम्भ कर दिया और वहीं पर बम्बई की एलीमेण्ट्री तथा इण्टर ग्रेड की परीक्षाएं उत्तीर्ण की।
बाद में माता-पिता के प्रोत्साहन पर 1936 में बम्बई के नूतन कला मन्दिर में प्रवेश लिया जहाँ श्री जी० एस० दण्डवतीमठ ने उन्हें बहुत प्रोत्साहित किया । कुछ समय बाद उन्होंने सर जे० जे० स्कूल ऑफ आर्ट में कला की उच्च शिक्षा ली और 1940 में कला का डिप्लोमा प्राप्त किया ।
शिक्षा प्राप्त करने के उपरान्त आजीविका के लिये एक ब्लाक बनाने वाली फर्म एक रुपया प्रतिदिन पर कार्य करना आरम्भ कर दिया। खाली समय में वे चित्र बनाते और प्रदर्शनी करते उनके चित्र बिकने लगे और सात-आठ वर्ष में एक कलाकार के रूप में उन्हें मान्यता मिली।
1948 में उन्होनें अपनी प्रथम विशाल प्रदर्शनी की। उसमें उन्हें बम्बई सरकार का पुरस्कार प्राप्त हुआ। 1949 से उन्होंने एकल प्रदर्शनियाँ आयोजित करना आरम्भ कर दिया। उक्त अवधि में ही उन्होंने चित्रकला की भारतीय विधि का अध्ययन अहमदाबाद के श्री एच० एल० खत्री से किया और उन्होंने भी आलमेलकर को बहुत प्रोत्साहित किया।
1953 में एक्सप्रैस ब्लाक वर्क्स से उनकी नौकरी छूट गयी किन्तु उन्होंने हिम्मत नहीं हारी। महाराष्ट्र के जन-जीवन के आधार पर वे एक चित्र श्रृंखला का निर्माण कर रहे थे। इसी समय उनके घर में आग लग गयी और उसमें उनके हजारों रेखा चित्र जलकर नष्ट हो गये।
इस आपत्ति को भी उन्होंने बड़े साहस से झेला और प्रतिदिन अठारह घंटे कार्य करके केवल दस महीने बाद ही प्रदर्शनी का आयोजन कर डाला। इस विपत्ति के समय मै० बोल्कार्ट ब्रदर्स ने अपने कैलेण्डर के लिए बारह भारतीय पक्षियों और पशुओं के चित्रों का अनुबन्ध पाँच हजार रुपये में किया।
देश-विदेश में उनकी ख्याति फैलाने में इन चित्रों ने बहुत सहायता की। इसके पश्चात् उन्होंने अनेक प्रदर्शनियों आयोजित की और एक दर्जन से अधिक स्वर्ण पदक, अनेक रजत पदक और बहुत से प्रमाण पत्र एवं प्रशंसा पत्रों से उन्हें सम्मानित किया गया। 1956 में उन्हें राष्ट्रपति द्वारा एक हजार रुपया नकद पुरस्कार तथा एक बनारसी दुपट्टा भेंट किये गये।
अपनी कला के सम्बन्ध में उन्होंने समस्त भारत के प्रत्येक भाग का भ्रमण किया और प्रकृति तथा जन-जातियों का चित्रण किया।
प्रारम्भ में आलमेलकर जल-रंगों से दृश्य-चित्रण करते थे फिर भारतीय परम्परागत शैली में प्राचीन कथानकों का चित्रण किया जिस पर मुगल, राजस्थानी, बसौली एवं दक्षिणी लघु-चित्रों का प्रभाव है।
सन् 1968 की अपनी 25वीं प्रदर्शनी से उन्होंने जल-रंगों के स्थान पर तैल रंगों का प्रयोग आरम्भ किया और आलंकारिता को भी कम कर दिया। उसके पश्चात् उन्होने भूरे रंग के गत्ते पर चित्र बनाना आरम्भ कर दिया। वे अंगुलियों से रंग भरते हैं और जल-सोखी गाढ़ी स्याही से तूलिका द्वारा रेखांकन करते हैं।
इस प्रकार उन्होंने दस हजार से भी अधिक चित्र बनाये हैं जो अनेक संग्रहालय में संग्रहीत हैं। उनकी शैली पर भारतीय लघु-चित्रों का प्रभाव है किन्तु उनके संयोजन आधुनिक और परिष्कृत हैं। आकृतियों को अपनी निजी शैली में ढाल कर तार के समान पतली रेखा से लयात्मकता तथा तनाव उत्पन्न किया गया है।
यह चित्रांकन प्राय टेम्परा में है। उनकी कला में लोक कला और आंचलिकता का पुट भी रहता है। अपने देश के लोक-जीवन तथा लोक कला को वे भारतीय और विदेशी जनता के सम्मुख लाना चाहते हैं। भारतीय चित्रकला में यही उनका योगदान है। उनकी आकृतियाँ किसी ननोरम लोक-दृश्य का अंग होती है।
आलमेलकर के चित्र आधुनिक शैलियों में नहीं है, न ही वे किसी परम्परागत शैली में बने हैं। उनमें कोई ऐसी नई बात भी नहीं है कि सहसा कोई उनकी ओर आकर्षित हो जाय: पर उनके चित्र आधुनिकतम शैलियों में बने चित्रों के साथ और शास्त्रीय शैलियों के चित्रों के साथ भी टाँगे जा सकते हैं। ये बाह्य आडम्बर से शून्य, सरल, विनयपूर्ण तथा विश्वासी कलाकार है। उनमें किसी प्रकार का दुराय वा भेदभाव नहीं है।
आलमेलकर को राष्ट्रीय अतिथि के रूप में मलयेशिया में भी आमन्त्रित किया गया था जहाँ उन्होंने अनेक व्याख्यान दिये। भारत लौटने पर उन्होंने अपने संस्मरण रेखा-चित्रों सहित प्रकाशित भी किये।
